Fred Perry – The 70th Anniversary Of The Twin Tipped Polo Shirt

Fred Perry is an iconic British label. This year the brand and its famous Polo Shirt celebrate their 70th anniversary. From 1952, the triple Wimbledon champion’s eponymous label presented a sophisticated version of sportswear aligned to the style Perry developed during his career and time as a co-owner of the prestigious Beverley Hills Tennis Club.

The Twin Tipped Polo Shirt was born when a buyer from Lillywhites requested unique shirt designs in football team colours. As the decades wore on, the shirt became a subcultural uniform representing different movements across the late 20th century. Embraced across music, film, art and sport, the garment became a powerful emblem of individuality, belonging and even rebellion.

A well-known advocate of the brand was Amy Winehouse. Whether it was on the streets of Camden or on stage, the legendary singer often sported the Polo Shirt, becoming synonymous with the quintessentially British styles associated with Fred Perry. Winehouse, who was the first female to produce her own line with the brand, was one of many famous musicians and sports stars to commonly dress in it. To this day, Fred Perry’s Laurel Wreath Logo is a symbol of British culture that continues to be celebrated.

Introducing: Gardens & Seeds

Available exclusively at HIP in Europe – Gardens & Seeds began as an Instagram mood board page in 2018. With its name a metaphor for encouraging creative thought and nurturing an open-minded community, G & S projects a philosophy and lifestyle anchored within positive, enlightening values like mindfulness, creativity and passion for the arts. The label’s platform is a space for discovery, with a curated feed shaped by its West Coast heritage. Whilst being firmly rooted in Californian style and culture, the Long Beach-based label have developed their own unique aesthetic and colour palette. The brand’s apparel collection focuses on clean, neutral colours, wearable designs and subtle intricacies. The result is elevated everyday essentials, allowing wearers to join Gardens & Seeds’ inclusive community and represent their open-minded vision.

In conjunction with our first collection from Garden & Seeds at HIP, we caught up with California based Erick de Vera – Co-founder and Creative Director of Garden & Seeds.

How did G&S begin?

G&S started as a passion project in 2018. It started as our mood board on Instagram, compiled of all our interest, passions, and inspirations that we felt represented the G&S lifestyle.

How would you break down the G&S ethos and feel?

G&S is a lifestyle brand that thrives off mindfulness, creativity, passion for the arts, faith and values on nurturing and building a positive, open minded community. The mission is to inspire and to motivate the doers and dreamers.

What is the usual process what designing each piece?

A lot of the pieces we’ve designed up to this point are essential pieces that’s missing from our Wardrobe or “Updating” pieces that we love through the G&S perspective. I call it the “G&S Update” like an iOS update on an iPhone.

What’s next for G&S?

We have a few projects and collaborations in the works, but I’m really excited about our 1st Capsule collection.

Keep up to date with Garden & Seeds here.

adidas SPEZIAL Summer ’22 Collection

Gary Aspden’s coveted adidas Originals SPEZIAL imprint returns with a new long-awaited collection for Summer. Featuring a variety of silhouettes taking reference from the adidas Originals archives, the collection draws wide inspiration from military and 1970s aesthetics whilst staying within the brands unique point of view.

Consisting of five unique silhouettes, the footwear offering for SPEZIAL for Summer ’22 is a mix of new hybrids alongside tweaked versions of lesser known shoes from the brand’s rich history. Starting off with the Adilette SPZL, which sees the return of the fan favourite slide in an off-white colorway with black embossed mod Trefoil and Spezial branding. The ZX 620 SPZL, takes cues from adidas’ famed ‘ZX Series’ with specific references to the ZX 600, ZX 555, and an assortment of mid 80s runners. An extension of adidas’ famed City Series: the Warszawa SPZL. Boasting a maroon suede upper with bright yellow synthetic leather stripes and a navy rubber outsole, the silhouette seamlessly reimagines the past for today. An archive style returns in the form of the Stapfen SPZL – featuring a unique lacing system with rope laces, a brown suede upper, tonal brown suede overlays, and a gum rubber outsole. The Summer ’22 collection is capped off with the Yabisah SPZL – brought back from the brand’s famed ‘Island Series’ for the first time, the sleek runner returns in a perfect one to one recreation from the past.

Transitioning focus from footwear to accompanying apparel – the collection features a number of military-inspired yet timeless garments which perfectly compliment the footwear offering. Headlined by the Calavadella Jacket – arriving in a seasonal peach colourway. Keeping the warmer months in mind, the Portinatx Shorts arrive in a sand colorway with the addition of an embroidered round Mod Trefoil badge. The Manarch TT is an elevated tracksuit and a refined take on the Beckenbauer silhouette, the carefully created track top features tonal black details and silicone badges. A selection of lightweight t-shirts and polos, meanwhile, offers a number of perfect options for the hot Summer days. Rounding out the seasonal offering is an accessories selection made up of the classic Parbold II Bag and a graphic Patch Bucket hat.
